The memorial center emerges as a metaphor to denote the calamity encountered by the victims and survivors in the Christchurch earthquake in 2011.  The memorial center is not merely a place for commemoration but also a platform for public activities.

The concept of memorial center is started with a circle to signify the soul of the victims that sacrificed in this tragedy. The memorial center is tapered at the top to allow the sunlight penetrate through the glass above, the stripes of light inside the memorial center are literally the hope that the victims were yearning for.
